Creative, flamboyant, inclusive, educational and most of all fun: there's nothing quite like a trip to the theatre. Here's our pick of London's top theatres for children – adults beware: this list may leave you feeling jealous!
The Albany Theatre in Deptford is a great place to entertain the kids with plays, dance, spoken word events and more. There are family-friendly shows scheduled each week, family tickets to help you save money, and special Family Sundays with family events throughout the centre.
Whether you're a theatre junkie, dance aficionado, fanatical about all kinds of music or need to entertain the children, North London arts venue artsdepot will definitely have something for you. The regular programme of children's events includes performances, workshops, courses and talks.
Chickenshed is an inclusive theatre company based in Cockfosters that brings people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities together to create groundbreaking theatre. The company's theatrical and musical productions are performed by children and adults of all backgrounds and abilities. As well as adult shows, they have an excellent programme of children's theatre.
Half Moon Young People's Theatre is a young persons theatre in East London which caters for 0 to 17 year olds. The Half Moon both produces professional theatre, and provides an extensive programme for participants. These programmes include youth theatre and one-off projects after school and during school holidays.
Jacksons Lane arts centre is housed in an imaginatively converted Edwardian church in Highgate. It has a strong programme of children's theatre, and welcomes touring companies from all over the world. More recently, Jacksons Lane has become known for producing and promoting contemporary circus work.
The magical Little Angel Puppet Theatre has been around since 1961. Its troupe of skillful puppeteers put on marionette shows all year round. The 100-seat theatre stands next to the workshop, where all their productions and puppets are developed and constructed. It also runs a Saturday Club and puppet-making workshops.
As well as presenting regular theatre shows for youngsters under the Lyric Children programme, the Lyric Hammersmith also hosts the Lyric Young Company (West London's largest youth theatre) and has a strong educational strand to its work. There are many, varied shows on offer for kids aged two and upwards.
The Unicorn Theatre is possibly the coolest theatre for kids in London! Located in a superb, purpose-built, state-of-the-art venue at London Bridge, the Unicorn stages more than 620 performances a year, as well as special events, workshops, activities and more.
The Tricycle Theatre has a rich programme of events for children. As well as regular theatre productions for children from the age of three upwards, there's also cinema, workshops, and after school activities for kids. The workshops programme has events suitable for kids as young as 18 months, up to school-leavers.
The Puppet Theatre Barge is a travelling theatre housed in a barge which travels on the waterways of London. The Puppet Barge Theatre presents marionette and rod puppet shows throughout the year, spending the winter in Little Venice in Central London, and the summer at various locations on the Thames.
