How much TV is too much?

With the inclining interest in playstation, xbox, DVDs and videos, many children are spending more and more hours watching TV and less time outside, being active, playing sport or having a hobby. And even more so in school holidays when children are home a lot more hours in the day.

In your house, do you have limits on the amount of television watched by your children?

What do you think is a reasonable amount of television for children to be watching?

Do you draw a line when it comes to TV, and encourage your children to play outside? Or is it a peace keeper in your house?

i cant see any reason why letting a baby watch tv could harm them?

If i need to get something done like wash and make all his bottles up or get a quick bath i put my 8 week old in his bouncer and in front of the tv. And i usually put south park on for him too! The colours are really bright and it keeps him entertained for 15 mins or so

I think it depends on the age. I hardly ever let my kids watch TV, they are both younger than 3 years and I don't think it is good for them to watch TV this early.
If they are older I think we'll allow them to watch TV no longer than 1 hour per day.

Each to their own. I have had friends admit that they provide TV to their kids so they don't have to deal with them as they spend most of their time in their rooms entertaining themselves.

There is lots of research into the negative effects on kids who watch a lot of TV, worth googling if you are particularly interested.
